Electrically Assisted Forming

IMG_20200623_143214.jpg

Electrically assisted manufacturing has been investigated since the 1960s. The athermal effects of passing an electric current through deforming material have been researched widely.

The benefits of electrical assistance are as follows:

  1. Reduction in flow stresses.

  2. Increased elongation.

  3. Increased diffusion.

  4. Reduced springback during forming.

  5. Increased control over precipitation.

Force Controlled Electrical Pulse

This research is concerned with understanding the effect of pulsed and constant electric current control through predetermined stress levels in the material. A novel control approach is devised which correlates the energy supply to the material deformation in real-time.

Unlike other control approaches, which are based on somewhat empirical methods, this approach does not require extensive testing. It is also robust for a wide range of strain rates.
